Joining a Medicare Advantage Program

Instructions for enrolling when you turn 65.

Your initial Medicare enrollment period is the three months prior to the month of, and the three months following, your 65th birthday. During that period, you have the option to join a Medicare Advantage program.

To enroll during your initial enrollment period, you should find a Medicare Advantage provider with whom you would like to be insured and file all necessary paperwork when enrolling in Medicare. Instructions for enrolling after the initial enrollment period.

If you do not decide to enroll in a Medicare Advantage program during your initial enrollment period, you may make changes to your Medicare coverage between October 15th and December 7th each year. During this period, you may enroll with a Medicare Advantage Provider, switch Medicare Advantage plans, or you could switch back to original Medicare.

It is also important to note that during the period between January 1st and February 14th of each year, which is referred to as the Medicare “open enrollment period,” there are regulations about what changes can be made to your Medicare Advantage coverage. During this period, you are not able to enroll with a Medicare Advantage provider, but you can switch back to original Medicare. You just have to make sure that if you wish to switch back to an original Medicare plan and you wish to set up a Medicare Prescriptions Plan, you must do so before February 14th.

So, the best time to enroll with a Medicare Advantage provider is during your initial enrollment period or between October 15th and December 7th of any year.
If you are not enrolling during your initial enrollment period, it’s important to note that in order to enroll in a Medicare Advantage program; you must already be enrolled in Medicare Part A and Medicare Part B.
